More than 25 years after his Lost Boy, Rufio, stole the show in Steven Spielberg’s Hook, Dante Basco wants to tell the rest of the character’s story. And he’s asking for your help.

Basco and his team of “hungry and seasoned filmmakers” have launched a Kickstarter campaign with a goal to raise $30,000 to fund the making of a short film titled “Bangarang”, about 13-year old Roofus, the boy who would become Rufio. The group have also set a “dream milestone” of $200,000 which they believe will allow them to make a feature film. As is standard for Kickstarter campaigns, donors can come away with a range of rewards, from “a special thanks” to an executive producer credit on the film.

In addition to donating toward the cause, fans can also respond to the casting call for a chance to be Roofus or one of his best friends, Julani and Ella.

Spielberg’s original fantasy film featured the late Robin Williams as an adult Peter Pan who is forced to return to Neverland to save his kids who had been abducted by Captain Hook, played by Dustin Hoffman. The film also starred Julia Roberts as Tinker Bell and Maggie Smith as Wendy.

After Robin Williams’ recent suicide, Basco posted the below YouTube video and a farewell letter on his blog to his former costar.

The Bangarang Kickstarter campaign ends on March 14, 2017, and, as of the time of this posting, has received just under $12,000 in pledges.

Since moving to the United States from the Philippines when I was twelve years old, I’ve been called some very… creative… things by certain people. This is a new one, though.

On New Year’s Eve, Las Vegas resident Dexter Manawat filmed his neighbor – irate about leaves, I’m guessing? – calling him an “orange savage” who was “one generation out of the jungle, like loin cloth wearers.”

The cringe-worthy video is about a minute-and-a-half long, and the neighbor doesn’t stop there. She says Manawat was from “some piece of shit Manila ass fucking ghetto living under a tarp piece of shit land,” whatever that means. He told KTNV.com that he had “never been called orange before… that was a first.” Neither have I, buddy.

Manawat elaborated on his intentions behind posting the video and why he ultimately removed the video from his page.

For what it’s worth, the woman has attempted to offer an explanation, saying she “was completely wrong” and “was in a blind rage.” She said that the tension between her and Manawat had been escalating for quite some time.

Jollibee

Jollibee – the Filipino fast food chain (like I needed to tell you that) – opened it’s first location in Chicago back on December 22nd after opening its first Illinois location in Skokie last summer.

I’m guessing that’s what prompted this A.V. Club post about the new eatery and describe it as “irrepressibly happy.” It’s sort of a strange article written from the point of view of someone who is more than a little puzzled by how much Filipinos love Jollibee. In the article, the chain is described as “stupefyingly, nigh-incomprehensibly popular” among Filipinos.

Granted, the author of the piece is none other than Kevin Pang, a James Beard Foundation Award winner for his food writing. So, I guess I can see why he’d be puzzled by people giving a restaurant featuring palabok, sweet spaghetti, and a giant bee that can be described as more-than-a-little-creepy the rock star treatment. I mean, even the great Anthony Bourdain once said Halo-Halo “makes no goddamn sense” and the aforementioned spaghetti was “deranged…yet strangely alluring.”

Anyway, the takeaway is that Jollibee is awesome. And you can now have some if you live in Chicago. Just ignore the people trying to understand why you’re so excited.

Vanessa Hudgens – she of High School Musical/Springbreakers/Dating Zac Efron fame – is set to headline the new Superhero-flavored sitcom Powerless on NBC.

This will mark the Filipino-American actress’ first full-time TV gig since her run on High School Musical ended. However, she recently dipped her toe in the small screen waters as Rizzo in Fox’s Grease Live. Her live performance in the musical earned her praise as she performed just one day after her father passed away from cancer.

Per Deadline, “[b]ased on characters from DC Comics, Powerless is a workplace comedy set at one of the worst insurance companies in America — with the twist being that it also takes place in the universe of DC Comics.”

According to TV Line, Hudgens will play Emily Locke, “a claims adjuster who loves her job because she gets to help people, but who is increasingly exasperated by the disruptive antics of the various Super Heroes that proliferate in her city.”

Hudgens also made news last week, but in a not-so-positive way. It was announced that she and her boyfriend, Austin Butler, were under investigation for defacing the Sedona Red Rocks in Arizona. This came after she posted a picture on instagram of their names surrounded by a heart carved on a rock. If it is determined that the carving was made in the Red Rocks District of Coconino National Forest, this could be found to have damaged a natural feature of the United States and Hudgens could face up to a $5,000 fine or six months in prison.

Coldplay teamed up with Queen Bey herself, Beyonce, Bruno Mars, and Mark Ronson to deliver what many are calling one of the best Super Bowl halftime performance ever at Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara, CA.

Whatever excitement the game was lacking – personally, I thought it was quite a snoozer – the artists more than made up for with colorful production, dazzling choreography, and spectacular showmanship.

Coldplay performed a medley of hits including Viva la Vida, Clocks, and their new single Adventure of a Lifetime. Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson came in with their ubiquitous 2015 hit Uptown Funk. Beyonce showed up with her Beyhive to perform her controversial new song Formation, which she debuted online only 24 hours earlier.

Watch the entire performance below and let us know what you think in the comments section.

Yesterday, LA Filipino chef Alvin Cailan opened up his newest spot Amboy. What was supposed to be a once-a-week pop-up became a Monday-Friday takeaway window, which shares a space with Cailan’s restaurant incubator Unit 120. Cailan – also the chef and founder of Eggslut – and his sous chef Justin Dauz use recipes from Cailan’s father but with a modern twist. Rice platters cost $7 – $10 with sides adding an additional $2 to your total. Refreshments offered at Amboy include a sweet coconut milk and a Tito Arnie – a Filipino version of an Arnold Palmer with calamansi juice instead of lemonade. Amboy is located at the Far East Plaza, 727 N. Broadway in Chinatown, and is open from 11:30 AM until the food runs out.

Syracuse, NY will soon be getting its very own Filipino restaurant. Azella Alvarez has been operating her Oompa Loompyas business at food festival booths and food trucks but, come March, she will be opening her very own permanent restaurant location. Alvarez moved to Syracuse from San Diego and focuses on different kinds of lumpia. Styles include traditional beef, spinach-artichoke, and buffalo wing dip. In addition, she will also be offering her own versions of adobo, lechon, and a selection of Filipino baked goods.

Cedrick Argueta, the son of a Salvadoran maintenance worker father and a Filipino nurse mother, was one of only 12 students to achieve a perfect score in the Advanced Placement Calculus exam. More than 300,000 students took the exam last May.

Argueta, a student at Abraham Lincoln High School in Los Angeles, CA, thanked teachers, family, and friends for helping him with this awesome achievement. He plans to apply to the California Institute of Technology, University of California, Berkeley, and Stanford University and would eventually like to work at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory after he graduates from high school.

The three-hour and 15-minute AP Calculus exam is made up of 60 multiple choice and free-response questions. In addition to his flawless AP Calculus exam, Argueta also earned perfect scores in the English and Math ACT college entrance exams.

In his spare time, Argueta volunteers at the Bonnie Brae Convalescent Hospital in Los Angeles, where both his parents work.

FLPNO is back

Yes. FLPNO has been gone for a while (not that you noticed). But we’re back.

I had to take some time off to make sure I didn’t have to retake the California Bar Exam (again). Now that that’s over with, we’re going to try to get back to our regularly scheduled programming.

I did want to point you to a couple of things that happened while we were gone. First, there was this wonderful profile of yours truly on Positively Filipino by the amazing Elizabeth Ann Quirino (if you haven’t checked out her drool-worthy Asian in America site, you’re missing out).

Second, I started my own immigration law practice, which is discussed a bit in the Positively Filipino post. Having gone through the long, complex, and arduous experience myself, I know there are many fellow Pinoys out there who could use my legal help in navigating the system. You can check out my practice’s site and/or drop me a line at gino@barricalaw.com.
